The better late than never edition ….

Austin Tilghman, RB, Archbishop Carroll:  Tilghman transferred from St. Andrew’s (Del.) to be a huge part of the Patriots’ boys basketball team in the winter season. But he’s quite the dynamo on the football field, as well. The Patriots were buoyed by Tighman’s 161 yards and two touchdowns last week against Conwell-Egan, and they’ll need efforts like that one going forward to keep pace with West Catholic et al in the Catholic League Class AA.

Kevin Leyden, HB, Haverford High: Leyden was a terror for Harriton defenders in the Fords’ 31-6 triumph. The All-Delco eclipsed the 100-yard plateau for the third straight week with a phenomenal, 180-yard and three-touchdown performance against the Rams. In the last two weeks Leyden has posted 310 rushing yards and four TDs.

Joe Volciak, DE/FB, Penncrest: Volciak didn’t tear up the scoreboard like Leyden, but he was the most dangerous and productive player in the Penncrest-Springfield game. Volciak posted 66 yards rushing and caught a Dan Fisher touchdown pass en route to a 19-6 victory, putting the Lions at 5-0. Defensively, Volciak registered a sack and was torturing Springfield ball carriers the entire night.

Christian Portale, QB, Garnet Valley: A Jaguars offense that can throw the ball with regularity and efficiency is an extremely terrifying thought. Portale might just be getting started. The longtime varsity backup is slowly developing into the type of signal caller Ricci knew he would be. Portale connected on 11 of 13 pass attempts for 153 yards and four touchdowns to help lead the Jags to a 48-13 win over Marple Newtown.

“Christian is a very talented quarterback who understands our offense thoroughly,” coach Mike Ricci. “He has a very good arm and puts the ball in where it needs to be put.”

Matt Borchert, WR/PR/KR, Ridley: Guess what Borchert did? He brought back not one, but two punts. That’s something you don’t see that often – and he also added a rushing touchdown -, so even though the Green Raiders beat up on an undermanned Lower Merion program, it still counts. Borchert has had a very nice season doing a little bit of everything for Ridley.
